Nuclear Scintigraphy

Although nuclear scintigraphy has been available for years in equine medicine, the introduction of computer assisted imaging systems has revolutionized the "bone scan." Georgetown Equine Hospital now offers the most advanced scintigraphic system available with our Hermes operating system. Through use of motion correction, statistical analysis, side by side and overlay comparison with radiographs, our doctors are now able to diagnose conditions previously not appreciated.

Mares and Foals

Reproduction

The equine breeding industry has evolved from predominately live cover to an increasing reliance on "artificial" or assisted reproductive technologies. Managing a mare from estrous to foaling takes a significant amount of organization, knowledge, and ability.

At Georgetown Equine Hospital, we strive to remain on the cutting-edge of reproductive medicine in our efforts with artificial insemination, frozen semen, embryo transfer, stallion collection, and other assisted reproductive techniques.

Epidural Catheter

Medicine

Despite our best efforts at preventive medicine, equine malodies such as colic, EPM, gastric ulcers, and respiratory disease persist. Fortunately, advances in diagnostics and treatments allow us to provide superior veterinary care both on the farm and at our clinic.

Portable ultrasound, radiography, and endoscopy as well as advances in fluid therapy give us the ability to deal with the majority of equine medical emergencies. However, an in-house lab and diligent staff make our clinic a viable option in many cases.

Preventive Health

Based on the high expectations we place on our equine athletes, it is imperative to provide, to the best of our ability, a comprehensive preventive health care program to our patients. These measures include early recognition of lameness and disease, appropriate nutrition, parasite control, and vaccination.

Recent advances in nutritional science, new vaccines, improved understanding of parasite control, and broodmare management necessitate regular review of your preventive health strategy. Please see our vaccination and deworming schedule on the Client Information page for more specifics.
